Salsa On1 vs On2: Which Should You Learn First?
Same music, different break step. Explore the timing and feel before choosing your first salsa lessons.
On1 and On2 at a glance
Both use an eight-count musical cycle. The key difference is when you change direction. These descriptions refer to common linear On1 and New York-style On2; other On2 conventions exist, so check the count rather than assuming the label tells you everything.
| Aspect | On1 | On2 |
|---|---|---|
| Break steps | Change direction on beats 1 and 5. | New York-style On2 changes direction on beats 2 and 6. |
| Basic count | Six steps across eight beats: 1-2-3, 5-6-7. | Common New York timing also steps 1-2-3, 5-6-7, with the break on 2 and 6. |
| Musical feel | The break lines up with the start of each four-beat phrase. | The break shifts within the phrase, highlighting a different relationship to the percussion. |
| Common association | Often associated with LA-style, linear salsa and a clear downbeat start. | Often associated with New York-style salsa, mambo timing and musical phrasing. |
| Social settings | Salsa classes and socials where partners share On1 timing. | Salsa and mambo-oriented socials where partners share On2 timing. |
| Starting as a beginner | A straightforward way to connect a first basic to the count. | An equally valid start if its feel or your intended social scene appeals to you. |
Choose one timing to start
You do not need to master both at once. If you are starting from scratch, On1 can make the first break easy to locate. If On2's phrasing is what you enjoy hearing, start there. The most useful choice is the timing you can practice consistently with the people and music you want to dance to.
Private lessons at Infinity Dance Sport Center in Kearny Mesa let you slow down the count, practice weight changes, and connect comfortably with a partner. No partner or previous experience is needed.

Questions about salsa timing
Does On2 mean taking only two steps?
No. Both styles commonly use six steps across eight beats. On1 and On2 name the beat of the break step, not the number of steps.
Is On2 harder than On1?
Neither is inherently better. On1's downbeat break can be straightforward to hear at first. On2 places that break differently, which becomes comfortable with guided listening and practice. Start consistently with one timing.
Is Mambo the same as Salsa On2?
They share musical roots and a break on count two. New York On2 salsa is often called mambo, but ballroom Mambo may use a different step schedule and syllabus. Ask which timing your partner uses.
Is Cuban salsa On1 or On2?
Casino is defined more by its circular partner movement and connection than by a single timing label. Many dancers use On1, while other timings exist. Linear On1-versus-On2 does not describe every casino tradition.
Which should I learn first?
Choose one timing that fits your music preference and where you want to dance. On1 is a straightforward starting option; On2 is a good choice when its rhythmic feel or your intended scene draws you in. Build balance and connection before switching between timings.
